Updated tips for treatment of weight problem for children
and adolescents include medication
Updated recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics for the
treatment of obesity call for immediate use of behavioral therapy
and lifestyle changes, and say that some younger
people should use surgery and medication.
The advice, published Monday in the journal Pediatrics, is the first comprehensive
update of the academy's obesity treatment recommendations
in 15 years. They provide guidance for the
treatment of children from 2 years to adolescence.
The indicators recognize that obesity is complex and is linked to the
right of access to nutritious food and physical care
Treatment for younger children should focus on the behavior
and lifestyle of the entire family, including vitamin support
For children 12 and older, the use of weight-loss medication is appropriate, as is behavioral
fitness therapy and lifestyle remedy, the academy says
Adolescents 13 years of age or older with severe weight problems
should be evaluated for surgical treatment
