Updated tips for treatment of weight problem for children and adolescents include medication

Updated recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics for the treatment of obesity call for immediate use of behavioral therapy

and lifestyle changes, and say that some younger people should use surgery and medication.

The advice, published Monday in the journal Pediatrics, is the first comprehensive update of the academy's obesity treatment recommendations

in 15 years. They provide guidance for the treatment of children from 2 years to adolescence.

The indicators recognize that obesity is complex and is linked to the right of access to nutritious food and physical care

Treatment for younger children should focus on the behavior and lifestyle of the entire family, including vitamin support

For children 12 and older, the use of weight-loss medication is appropriate, as is behavioral fitness therapy and lifestyle remedy, the academy says

Adolescents 13 years of age or older with severe weight problems should be evaluated for surgical treatment
